Successfully Hosts the '2024 Global Symbiosis English Translation Contest'

The Humanities Utmost Sharing System Project Team (Director Lee Hye-young, hereinafter referred to as the HUSS Project Team) successfully hosted the "2024 Global Symbiosis English Translation Contest" to promote sustainable global coexistence and growth. The award ceremony was held on campus on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

The Contest consisted of translating three English texts into Korean, covering the fields of humanities and social sciences, business/economics, and science/technology/IT. The submissions from 50 participants were evaluated based on fluency, style, and accuracy of the translations.

The Grand Prize was awarded to Kang Ye-jun from the Department of English Language and Indusrty, while the Excellence Awards went to four students: Park Yeon-woo and Jeong Hong-kyung from the Department of English Language and Indusrty, Kim Jun-seo from the School of Information Convergence, and Yoon Seong-won from the Department of Electrical and Biological Physics. In addition, 10 students received Honorable Mentions. All winners were presented with scholarships and certificates of recognition.

Lee Hye-young, Director of the HUSS Project Team, remarked, "The Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to novelist Han Kang, whose work deeply resonated with us in the Korean cultural sphere, was made possible through the efforts of multilingual translators. In the AI era, translation skills are essential for fostering global coexistence. The HUSS Project Team is committed to actively supporting students in developing their global communication skills."

Professor Lee Il-jae (Department of English Language and Indusrty), who oversaw the Contest, expressed gratitude, saying, "I would like to thank the project team for their active support in organizing the translation Contest." He further emphasized the importance of strengthening translation skills, stating, "The ability to express oneself in multiple languages and to understand others who use unfamiliar languages can become a key competitive edge for individuals in the global arena and, ultimately, enhance the competitiveness of societies and businesses."
