Multimedia Conference ‘Video Dev Days 2024’ Held at Kwangwoon University
The Open Source Multimedia Conference, Video Dev
Days 2024 (VDD24), organized by VideoLAN, was successfully held at Kwangwoon
University from Saturday, November 2, to Sunday, November 3, 2024.
VideoLAN is a nonprofit organization that
develops open-source software such as VLC, FFmpeg, x264, and dav1d. Among them,
VLC is a video player with over 5.6 billion downloads. FFmpeg is software used
for handling multimedia and is widely regarded as an industry standard,
utilized by numerous companies.
Video Dev Days, held annually, is an event that
brings together a diverse range of developers, including contributors to
open-source projects like VideoLAN, Kodi, libplacebo, and mpv, as well as
employees from companies such as Meta, Vimeo, Google, Samsung, YouTube, and
Igalia. The event featured presentation and workshop sessions. During the
presentation sessions, valuable information on various technologies and
development trends, including RISC-V, the AV1 codec, and optimization
techniques, was shared. The workshop sessions featured lively discussions on
the development directions of open-source software, followed by small group
discussions.
During Video Dev Days, which was attended by
approximately 100 participants, active communication and interaction took place
among attendees. This event provided a valuable platform for fostering
interaction within the open-source community and contributing to technological
advancement.
This year's Video Dev Days, held at Kwangwoon
University, was the first to take place in South Korea and the second in Asia,
following the 2019 event in Japan. The event was made possible through the
efforts of VideoLAN, Moon Sung-jun (School of Software, Enrolled in 2020), and
Professor Alaric Hamacher from Kwangwoon University. The successful hosting of
Video Dev Days 2024 provided participants with a valuable and enriching
experience.
